The ongoing conflict in Iraq has forced more than 3 million people from their homes.

Some have been able to return home but the vast majority of families continue to live in formal camps and informal settlements inside Iraq. Many hospitals and health facilities have been damaged or destroyed, leaving many people unable to access the health services they need.

We are there to help.

Every facet of society has been impacted by years of conflict, according to the United Nations. The economy has taken a severe hit and entire communities are devastated or destroyed. Displaced children often go without schooling, and families who lose their livelihoods struggle to find work to provide for their needs. The conflict has taken its toll on the agricultural production, making food a scarcity and putting families at greater risk of malnutrition. Many hospitals and health facilities have been damaged or destroyed, leaving many people unable to access the health services they need.

How We Help

Emergency Response

Families fleeing the violence in their communities have to leave everything behind, often in a moment’s notice. Travelling to safe areas can often take families several days on foot. For families with very young, elderly, or disabled members, the journey can be even more challenging and dangerous. To provide immediate relief, we provide emergency kits to displaced families that include hygiene and shelter items and food preparation supplies. Fleeing families often go without medical care for long periods of time, which is why we’ve set up Mobile Medical Teams who are equipped to treat immediate and chronic conditions and can operate in remote areas with few basic services or buildings.

Health Care

Medair runs the primary health clinic in a camp housing people fleeing Hawija, an area still controlled by armed groups. A community health team visits families in their tents to encourage better health and nutrition practices and provide direct support. When communities can return home, they often come back to near or total destruction. Medair supports health clinics with medicine and staff until they are able to operate independently again.

Mobile Medical Teams

When violence creates a mass movement of people, existing health systems in host communities are often overwhelmed. As a result, many people struggle to access health care. Medair’s Mobile Medical Teams are deployed to help people who would otherwise go without health services.

Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene

Displaced families living in unfinished buildings, makeshift tents, and warehouse spaces lack suitable sanitation facilities, while clean water for drinking and cooking is in short supply. Medair brings clean water and storage tanks to affected families and distributes water purification tablets, storage containers, and hygiene items to help families stay healthy. We help repair sanitation facilities or build new ones, and visit families one-by-one to teach them how to stay healthy and prevent disease.

Cash Assistance

Medair provides displaced families with the means to afford shelter and other basic items they need to survive while they wait to return home.

Help families in Iraq recover their lives with dignity

Medair’s team in Iraq has identified 826 vulnerable families near Mosul and Kirkuk who require our urgent help as they resettle. They tell us that their biggest need is food assistance.

As winter approaches, we must ensure that these families have enough food to last three months. We need your help to make that happen.
